Steep mountains

Gitwe comes from the hills surrounding Heza washing station in northern Burundi. Reaching Heza means winding through steep mountains and across hand-built bridges, a reminder of just how remote this part of Kayanza is.

This lot was processed using water from a nearby spring and carries the distinct character that has made Burundi coffees so loved.

In the cup, expect bright citrus notes and tea-like qualities of black tea.

The Producer

In Kirundi, Heza means “beautiful place”, and the name feels fitting. Long Miles Coffee works with farmers across these hills, where coffee grows alongside bananas, beans and cassava.

Life on Gitwe hill is always busy. Market stalls line the roadside, carpenters work in small workshops and tall fig trees provide shade from the East African sun.

  • Production Data

    Produced by Long Miles Coffee
    Region - Butanyerera Province
    Grown at 1900 - 2100 masl
    Varietal - Red Bourbon
    Harvest - July 2025
    Process - Washed

  • Washed

Ripe cherries are washed and then pulped to remove the majority of skin and fruit from the bean before its fermented.

Fermentation is brief and helps to remove any remaining material from the pulping process as well as adding complexity to the coffee.

The coffee is then washed and sun-dried, mechanically dried, or a combination of the two until the desired moisture level is reached.
