Husband and wife team.

This lot was grown and harvested by 29 farmers in Nyamasheke District, in Rwanda’s Western Province, under the guidance of lead farmer Egide Vuguzigire.

The farmers work with Rwamatamu coffee, a family-owned coffee producer established in 2015 by husband and wife team Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laeticia.

Based in Nyamasheke, Rwamatamu works closely with local farmers to support coffee production through training, seedlings and initiatives that encourage longer-term involvement in coffee farming.

The Producer

Alongside this work, Rwamatamu supports a women’s cooperative and a youth association in nearby Mbare, where people aged 18–35 are given opportunities to develop their skills and build a future in coffee farming.

During processing at Rwamatamu’s Mbare washing station the cherries were spread out onto drying beds and sorted by hand to remove defects while being in exposed to the sun. After 24 hours in the sun, the cherries are heaped together and covered with a shade net for 48 hours of dry fermentation, then spread out again for full drying, which takes about 33 days.

Ripe cherries are dried whole commonly on patio’s, drying beds or even the bare earth allowing the bean to ferment naturally encased by its fruit.

The cherries are turned regularly to reduce the risk of defects and ensure even drying.

Once the cherries resemble raisins and the target parameters are met the coffee is hulled and sorted in the dry mill.
